Cool Gadgets For Your Garage

Prevent Major Issues with Routine Garage Door Maintenance

You rely on your automatic garage door to run smoothly every day, but this also requires routine maintenance. It can be really frustrating when it suddenly stops working, especially when you are in a hurry and need to get your car out to go to work or you forgot your house key and the garage is the way into the house. The best thing you can do is work on preventative maintenance to avoid these bigger issues later on.

Inspect the Hardware

When maintaining your garage door, it is important that you focus on the hardware and moving parts. These small parts might seem minor, but they are controlling a lot of your garage door's function, so it is essential that you not forget them. For starters, find all moving parts and make sure they are kept lubricated. You can use lubricating oil or grease on them routinely whenever you do maintenance or when you hear squeaking sounds as you open or close the garage door. This includes rollers, chains, and any other hardware that is showing signs of wear. Also tighten up the hardware as needed and inspected it for signs of major wear and tear. Some hardware might eventually need to be replaced.

Test the Safety Features

You want to make sure the safety features are working properly before an unfortunate accident occurs. For example, your automatic garage door probably has a reverse backup feature. This causes the garage door to sense when something is in its path, so that it doesn't close on that object. It can help protect pets and small children, and keep personal effects from being damaged. To test it, open the garage door and place something underneath it that you wouldn't mind being slightly damaged, like an empty plastic storage bin. Close the garage door and see if it recognizes the object and backs up as it is supposed to. If not, you need to get that fixed and be extra careful until the problem is corrected.

Check the Weatherstripping

The weatherstripping on your automatic garage door is another thing to check for quality. Weatherstripping should be installed on the sides of your doors, which insulates the garage and helps keep rain and snow out. If you notice that the weatherstripping is starting to wear down, it might be time to replace it. If you have a garage door made of wood, you should also look into weatherstripping on the bottom of the door as well, as this prevents mould and rot from wet grounds.
