3 Things You Need to Check If Your Garage Door Won't Close All the Way
Garage door repairs are usually costly. Before you call a professional to fix your garage door problems, it is important to troubleshoot some of these problems on your own. Some of the garage door problems are actually easy to fix, so you may realise that you don't need a professional after all. Among the major garage door problems are doors that won't close all the way. If you notice that your garage door doesn't close fully, checking the following parts can help you find a way to fix it.
The Sensors
The safety sensors on your garage door should be the first things you check. Usually, there's one safety sensor on each side of your garage door. These sensors often have lights. For properly functioning safety sensors, both lights have to be on. Blinking or completely shut off lights are a sign that the sensors are misaligned and have to be adjusted. To do this, find the metal brackets holding your garage door and push against them. You can also loosen the knob until both lights start working.
The Limit Switch
This switch regulates how far up or down your garage door opener will move the door. Therefore, find this switch and adjust it accordingly. For most garage door units, the switches are located behind the motor head or at the back of the cover of the bulb lens. To adjust the travel limit, start by pressing the opener button to open your garage door. Using a flathead screwdriver, you should then carefully adjust the limit. For most garage doors, turning the screws on the limit switch in a clockwise fashion should increase the limit. Continue the adjustments as you close and open the door as necessary until it closes fully. It is important to do the adjustments in small increments so that you don't end up with a garage door that closes too tightly because this can set off its safety force.
The Garage Door Seal
The seal of your garage door plays a key role in the opening and closing mechanism of the door. Therefore, check the condition of the seal. If it is damaged or missing, replacing it with a new one should do the trick. When choosing garage door seals, go for thicker options. They are more sturdy and adhere well in extreme weather.
Preventive maintenance is usually the key to avoiding garage door problems. Therefore, always inspect the hardware for any damages and lubricate the moving parts periodically.
